Red Ring of Death

Edit 2009.12.11
I got my Xbox back!  It ended up being replaced by a "Certified Microsoft Replacement Xbox360 Console".  At first I was disappointed to get a different used one.  But after inspecting it (looked brand new, no scratches, etc) and hooking it up, it ran fine.  I guess as long as it works and won't RRoD again, I'm happy.  They also sent a 1-month of LIVE card too.

Edit 2009.11.24
Microsoft sent an email notifying me that they received my 360.

Edit 2009.11.17
Mailed the 360 using the prepaid UPS lable.

Edit 2009.10.27
Submitted a repair request.  Now I wait for them to mail me a box to send my 360 in.

Edit 2009.10.26
RRoD again!  I think I'm going to have to send it in.  =(

Edit 2009.10.19
It seems like the red ring was a heat issue.  The 360 turned on after I let it cool off.  But then froze again after approximately 10 minutes.  Later I tried putting a small desk fan behind the Xbox, blowing across the back.  It didn't freeze once, and I was able to play for a couple of hours straight.  RRoD defeated!

Original Post
My Xbox finally got the infamous Red Ring of Death tonight.  I was playing Street Fight IV, and all the sudden I heard scratchy sound.  Then the screen had rain-like static and froze.  I turned it off, waited a few minutes and turned it back on.  Instead of starting normally, I was treated to the RRoD.

I got worried and turned the machine off.  I waited a bit longer and restarted it.  This time it started fine, phew!  My friend Keun had the same problem.  He told me that that's how his 360 eventual died.  Eliu also had RRoD twice.  And Chris once this past summer.  It seems like I'm on track to be next!

Here is what Microsoft support page has to say about this issue: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907534.

Also keeping in mind that back in July 2007, Microsoft extended the warranty to three years.  Mine was manufactured September 2007, so I'm safe.  But if you need to dispute the warranty, you can call them at (800) 4MY-XBOX.

ebay problem

Last week (Thursday July 30, 2009) I won a used copy of Ace Combat 6 (Xbox 360) on ebay for $19.50.  I promptly paid via paypal.  I was pretty excited because I've been talking with my friends who were all getting it so we can play online together.

I thought the seller so_flossy would ship the game the next day.  Friday evening, I checked the winning and saw that it hadn't been shipped it.  I gave the seller the benefits of the doubt and waited some more, giving him the weekend off.  Maybe he would ship it on Monday.  Monday came and went.  I sent him a message via ebay asking about the game.  No response.  Tuesday I sent another message.  No response.  Wednesday I sent a message saying I will file a complaint if I don't hear back.  Still no response.

So today, Thursday, (a week from when the auction ended), I opened a case with paypal/ebay.   Hopefully things will go well.

Follow up (August 10, 2009):
Here is what was said in the paypal disput:

I won the item last week (July 30, 2009) and promptly paid for it via paypal. It's been a week. The item doesn't appear to be shipped. I tried contacting the seller three times with no response.

Whoa there. I have 248 positive feedback. Pardon me, I sent all the games out earlier in the week, so I have not checked my email in days. Rest assured you will receive the item as it was shipped earlier in the week. Will scan a receipt of the postage paid to ship you the item, and send it to PayPal if this escalates any further.

I will wait. But I would appreciate it if you could at least mark the item in ebay as shipped. Not getting any kind of response was a bit unnerving.

A bit unnerving? You obviously didn't read what I just posted.

Yes it was unnerving after paying for the item within the hour then not knowing the status of the item for a week (including no reply to my messages). At the very least, marking the item on ebay as shipped would have helped.
Anyway, I received the game today. It is in good condition. Thank you.

I received the game today.  But it was postmarked August 7, 2009 (a day after he responded).  I don't know if he would ever ship the game had I not raised the dispute.  Anyway the game is in good condition and I'm pretty happy with the production, but not so much the buying experience.  I decided not to leave a feedback for him.

Christmas Break 2009

I went over to Jacksonville for Christmas.  One of the cool presents I received this year was a set of Guitar Hero: World Tour.  At one point, I had a few friends over and we were rocking it out :)
